Headboards for Beds UK

Picture of bed with headboardUsually when a bed is purchased the headboard is part of the package, but occasionally it might be necessary to put a bed together or to find pieces that suit other furnishings better. Most traditionally made beds consist of a frame, a mattress that is sold separately and of course the headboard. It is necessary that all these things fit together well since if they do not the function of the bed—a good night’s sleep—will not be possible .

This means the first thing you need to do when it is time to go in search of a headboard is to very carefully measure the width and length of the frame. Then measure the height of the bed including the mattress since nothing is worse than having a mattress that does not properly fit up against the headboard.

The next measurement is the room the bed occupies. The headboard needs to fit the color, style and size of the bedroom it will be in. A light colored headboard in a room full of warm dark color will draw the eyes for all the wrong reasons. Likewise, a dark headboard in a predominately light room will appear oppressive. The headboard should match the rest of the dominant furnishings while the bed coverings and shams can be used to match lighter or darker elements that are less prominent in the wallpaper, drapes, or carpeting. The same can be said of the style. If a certain style dominates in the bedroom, the headboard should not deviate too far from that style.

A large room is an easy fit. A small bed might seem an oddity in a large room, but a tall headboard, or even a headboard with a bookcase will make the bed seem bigger. Fitting a headboard for a large bed in a small bedroom can be a challenge, however. One idea might be to use a wrought iron or grillwork headboard. Another good idea some decorators have used is a sturdy frame with either a painting or quilt as the backing. This would be best in a seldom used room on a bed that is mostly for decoration.

When attaching the headboard to the bed frame, the main bolt should be tightened securely since an unsecured headboard can fall. This can be potentially dangerous, especially for young children. Since this is not the headboard that came with the bed, check the size of the bolt. If it seems too small, get the next largest size and check this for a better fit. If the hole for the bolt’s head seems too large, then use a washer. Place the washer flush with the hole for the screw and then put the screw through the washer and the headboard. If the hole for the bolt can’t be fitted at all then try drilling a new hole about an inch or so away from the original. Do the same on the other side of the headboard brace so it will stay in place.
